Most grammar instruction is built around what students do wrong. This free module is built around what authors do on purpose. In this self-paced learning experience, ELA teachers in grades 3–12 will work through a complete Invitation Cycle, the structured, repeatable process at the heart of Patterns of Power, using an excerpt from Annie Dillard's An American Childhood as a mentor text. Rather than correcting student errors, you'll learn to invite students into the craft moves that published authors make intentionally, helping them understand grammar as a tool for meaning-making rather than a set of rules to follow. By the end of this module, you will have experienced the full cycle firsthand as a learner, studied specific craft moves in a rich nonfiction text, and walked away with a planning template you can use with your own classroom texts the next day. No prior experience with Patterns of Power is required, but if you've already seen this work in action, this module will give you a closer look at the instructional moves underneath it.
